A guard shaped

around how you play

A sports mouthguard is a custom-made appliance an athlete wears during training and competition to protect the teeth and jaw and to hold the lower jaw in a stable, comfortable position under exertion.

At Real Smile Dentistry, a Miami performance mouthguard starts with an impression of your own teeth, so it fits your mouth and bite perfectly. That’s what separates a guard you forget you are wearing from one you keep spitting out. We design sportsguards for contact and collision athletes, for people who clench their teeth when they push hard, and for anyone who wants protection that matches the way they move.

We’ve worked with professional athletes and trainers, and we bring the same physiologic approach to a guard for a weekend competitor.

What is a performance

mouthguard, and who is it for?

A sports mouthguard protects the teeth, lips, and jaw during sport while keeping the bite in a position the muscles can hold without strain. Custom guards suit athletes in contact and collision sports: football, hockey, basketball, boxing, mixed martial arts, lacrosse, rugby, wrestling, and skateboarding among them. They also help athletes who grind or clench during heavy effort, since a well-fitted guard cushions those forces instead of letting them travel through the teeth and jaw joints.

Children and teens who play organized sports benefit too, and their guards need remaking as their teeth and jaws change. A quick evaluation at either Miami office tells us which design fits your sport, your age, and your history of dental work.

The physiologic difference in how we fit yours

The way a guard sits on the lower jaw shapes how comfortable it feels and how well the muscles cope with impact. At Real Smile Dentistry, we practice physiologic dentistry, which studies how the bite, jaw joints, and muscles work as one system. For a mouthguard, that means we look at where your jaw wants to rest before we set the bite in the guard, using tools like computerized bite analysis and jaw tracking that already guide our TMJ treatment work.

Athletes who clench often carry tension into the jaw, neck, and airway. Building the guard around a balanced jaw position keeps those forces in check and connects to the same airway and breathing principles we apply across the practice. A guard fitted this way is easier to wear, which is the honest test of whether an athlete actually keeps it in.

FAQs

How much does a Miami performance mouthguard cost?

Cost depends on the design, the material, and whether we are protecting existing dental work, so we give you a clear estimate after your exam rather than a number online. We accept American Express, Visa, MasterCard, and Discover, and we work with financing partners including CareCredit and HelloBasis, so our team can walk through the options with you before anything begins.

Which athletes and sports need one?

Anyone in a contact or collision sport should wear a guard: football, hockey, basketball, boxing, MMA, lacrosse, rugby, wrestling, and skateboarding are common ones. Athletes who clench during heavy lifting or intense effort also benefit, because the guard absorbs forces that would otherwise reach the teeth and jaw joints. If you are unsure whether your sport calls for one, ask us at either Miami location.

How long does it take to get a custom guard?

We capture a digital scan at your first visit, and the lab builds your guard to that scan. Most guards are ready within a couple of weeks, and you come back for a short fit check before using it.

How do I clean and store my mouthguard?

Rinse it after each use, brush it gently with a toothbrush, and let it dry before storing it in a ventilated case. Keep it out of hot cars and away from direct heat, which can warp the fit. Bring it to your dental visits so we can check the fit and condition.

Is a custom guard better than a boil-and-bite from the store?

A custom guard is molded to your exact teeth and bite, so it stays put, protects more evenly, and lets you breathe and talk more easily than a stock or boil-and-bite guard. Over-the-counter guards tend to sit loose or bulky, which is why athletes often stop wearing them. A guard fitted at our office is built to stay in during the moments you need it.

What to expect at your fitting

Your fitting begins with a short exam of your teeth, bite, and any dental work that needs protecting. We take a digital scan rather than a messy tray of putty, then send the design to a lab that builds the guard to that scan. We check the fit in person before you take it onto the field.
  • The scan: A digital impression captures your teeth and bite in minutes, with nothing to gag on.
  • The design: We set the guard's thickness and jaw position around your sport and your bite, then the lab fabricates it.
  • The fit check: You return to try the guard, and we adjust it until it seats firmly and lets you breathe and speak.
  • Follow-up: We re-check the fit at your regular visits and remake the guard for growing athletes or after major dental changes.

Why choose us for a Miami

performance mouthguard?

We fit performance mouthguards the way we approach jaw pain and breathing: around how your bite and muscles actually work, not off a stock tray. That physiologic training is what shapes a guard an athlete will keep wearing.

A bite-first approach

We set the guard around a balanced jaw position using the same computerized bite analysis behind our TMJ care.

Custom, not off the shelf

Every guard is built to a digital scan of your own teeth for a fit that stays put.

Care for every athlete

We fit guards for professionals, weekend competitors, and growing kids and teens.
